atop socials

In 2024 I’ll be skimming, lurking, and shipping work there, but with a newfound kind of managed stand-offishness for the socials, all of this amid the more popular of the modern networks. My one and only resolution for the new year was to attempt a wholesale change my personal and professional trajectory through the social media data-sphere. I’ll fully admit that there remains an indecisive trickster who has taken up residence in the wee, dark corners of my mind who can’t decide if I should strive for greatness online, or aim lower, perhaps as low as obscurity, and he flip-flops, back and forth, back and forth with regularity, enough to make me wobbly in the knees. Yet, as this new year takes root, I’m resolute to avoid his games and set some ground rules for my participation online.

This was ultimately triggered by my holiday reading (or should I write re-reading) which included the likes of both Godin and Pressfield, and which itself swirled with a different kind of destabilizing motion around the idea of purpose and craft and art and meaning. All of which is to say that as I put down those two books I began thinking that my obsession with building a following online or enhancing my presence through regular social media interaction, likes, follows, mentions, et cetera, and that so-called engaging was perhaps little more than a mythos of self-perpetuating illusion. All of it is little more than a distraction away from this larger goal, all of it steering me away from the life towards which I’ve been dedicatedly working.

My flow, as it is, does not benefit from a focus on levelling up third-party platform metrics but rather on building something more personal, local and mindful of the longer game I am playing.
